Gandachara: Many may be surprised to hear. One kilogram of mango costs two lakh seventy five thousand rupees. Yes, that’s right. Miyazaki Mango worth Rs 275,000 per kg is now available in Gandachhara subdivision of Dhalai district. By cultivating this Miyazaki variety of mango, a young man from the Chakma tribe has set up shelves all over the state.
That is to say, the will power is the great power proved by the talented educated youth of the tribe. As a result, crowds of people are growing every day in the orchards of the young people of that tribe, eager to see the valuable mangoes of that Miyazaki species. Pragyan Chakma is a resident of Narayanpur under Gandachhara subdivision of Dhalai district.
There he received a master’s degree in sculpture from Rabindra Bharati University. Then he returned to his home in Narayanpur of Gandachhara subdivision. Although the highly educated Pragyan ran for the job but the work was nothing, he finally concentrated on cultivating fruits based on his willpower and labor.
Pragyanbabu started orchard five years ago by purchasing about ten acres of hilly land next to Pancharatan Bazar under Gandachhara subdivision. Thirty species of local and foreign mangoes are being grown in Mr. Chakma’s orchards. Pragyan Chakma is also cultivating dragon fruit.
There are also fruits like banana, jackfruit, guava, pineapple, grapefruit and many more. However, the main attraction of Pragyan Chakma Fruit Garden is the mango of Miyazaki species. Pragyanbabu, a fruit grower, said that by collecting seeds through the net, he carefully planted 25 or 30 Miyazaki mango trees.
This time three trees bear fruit. Weight will be about fifteen to twenty kg. Pragyan Babu said that the price of this Miyazaki mango is Rs. 275,000 per kg. He said the demand for this miyazaki mango is very high in Madhya Pradesh, Jabbalpur. However, Pragyan Babu is worried about where to market that valuable mango.
Every day curious crowds are flocking to Pragyan Babu’s orchard to see this mango. People are applauding the success of Pragyan Chakma without any government help. Pragyanbabu said there is a shortage of water in the garden. Pragyan Chakma will be grateful if the sub-divisional ruler or the agriculture department comes forward to remove the water problem in the garden.
